I had long dreamed that my mother was black. I had invented a story, a past, to escape reality upon my return from Africa, to this country, to this city where I knew no one, where I had become a stranger. Then I discovered, when my father, at retirement age, came back to live with us in France, that he was the African. That was difficult to admit. I had to go back, start over, try to understand.
