1921, Vendée, France. Heart heavy and belly round after being a victim of incest, 15-year-old Louise cannot face her family. She quietly leaves home to become a housekeeper for a couple in Charente who offer her hospitality as a form of comfort. She gives birth to Rose, whom she cherishes nonetheless. Haunted by the memory of her parents who disowned her after learning of her condition, the young woman struggles to find happiness. Fortunately, she meets the gentle Marius with whom she goes on many dates. She also gradually builds a strong reputation as a cook among the region's notables. However, as if by providence, a unique opportunity presents itself that she cannot refuse: to go live in Canada. She packs her bags with her daughter and her friend Juliette.
