The classic Anglo-Saxon romance. A novel that hasn't aged a bit!

When Elizabeth Bennet first meets the coveted bachelor, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, she finds him arrogant and vain. Ostensibly indifferent to the young woman's yet very amiable appearance, he seems above all insensitive to her legendary vivacity of spirit. The day Elizabeth discovers that this Mr. Darcy is involved in the complex relationship between her own sister, her dear and beloved Jane, and Mr. Bingley, a good friend of Mr. Darcy, she is from then on
more determined than ever to thoroughly detest him.

In this sparkling comedy of manners, Jane Austen demonstrates the stupidity of judging by first impressions and brilliantly evokes the friendships, gossip, and other snobberies characteristic of provincial life in the middle class.
Beyond the romantic adventures of the five Bennet daughters, the author accurately portrays a satire of the conventions of good English society at the end of the 18th century which, two centuries later, hasn't aged a bit!
Translated from English by Valentine Leconte and Charlotte Pressoir, 1932.
