Confined to a rehabilitation center, Saul Indian Horse hits rock bottom, and it seems there's only one way out of his existence. Deep in introspection, this Ojibwe, of Anishinabeg origin from Northern Ontario, recalls both the horrors experienced in residential schools and his passion for hockey, a sport in which he excels. Saul, confronted with the harsh realities of 1960s-1970s Canada, was a victim of racism and suffered the devastating effects of alienation and cultural uprooting that affected many First Nations communities. With empathy and insight, Richard Wagamese paints a portrait of a man crushed by his destiny and, more broadly, of a generation of Indigenous people who were victims of their time and the decline of their culture.
