In the spring of 1972 a survey was conducted to assess the historic architecture of the town of Pictou. The research was sponsored by the Pictou Heritage Society and was made possible by a generous federal grant under the Local Initiatives Program.

The study revealed that entire 19th century neighbourhoods have been preserved intact through continuing use.

While 140 buildings were researched, only 55 were sketched for publication." — Maida Murray.

Patterson House, Bank of Nova Scotia and The Stalker Building, St. James's Anglican Church, St. Andrew's Church, Former Post Office, Inercolonial [sic] (C.N.R.)
