The Invisible Man The

Invisible Man is a science fiction novel published by Wells in 1897. The main character is Griffin, a scientist who develops a theory according to which any human can become invisible if their reflective index is altered. He tries this theory on his own skin, but he realizes that the phenomenon is irreversible. Thus, he goes mad with rage because he can no longer become a normal man and is condemned to remain invisible. To hide his "handicap", Griffin, who has become the invisible man, wraps his body in stockings, dresses in long clothes and always wears something on his head. The book has inspired several film directors, but the recent film signed by Paul Verhoeven, with Kevin Bacon in the lead role,
is the best received by viewers and critics, being nominated for an Oscar.

War of the Worlds

War of the Worlds, another successful sci-fi novel by Wells, focuses on a man walking through London while the Earth is being overrun by Martians. It seems that this is the first novel in which a possible conflict between earthlings and inhabitants of another planet is described. The book follows two epic threads: one - about the arrival of the Martians, the other - about the Earth under the rule of extraterrestrial forces. When a "meteorite" lands in South West London near the narrator's home, he is the first to discover that the object is actually a cylinder-shaped alien device. When the device opens, the extraterrestrial beings, described as the size of bears, but with eight limbs, emerge. Shortly after the cylinder lands on Earth, to protect himself, the narrator takes refuge in a bunker.
