Publishing, Social Advocacy and the 1917 Halifax Disaster
This book tells the story of Dr. Ligoure, a Trinidadian who obtained his medical degrees from Queen's University at Kingston, Ontario and went on to become the first Black physician to practice in Nova Scotia. During the chaotic weeks following the 1917 explosion in Halifax Harbour, Dr Ligoure treated hundreds of patients without payment. Hi unrelenting diligence and selfless actions saved many lives. From 1916-1917, he also served as editor and publisher of The Atlantic Advocate, the first newspaper in Canada devoted to the interests of Black people in Halifax and throughout the province.
